HANS ERIK RASMUSSEN
Adventurer, Expedition Leader, Psychotherapist
Hans Erik Rasmussen is a Danish author, lecturer, psychotherapist, adventurer and tour operator specializing in South America. Since 1981, he has traveled and lived in South America for a total of seven years and has conducted expeditions deep in the Amazon and high in the Andes. He speaks, reads and writes fluently in Spanish.
As an author, he has written a large number of books, primarily about South America, including guidebooks, educational books and books about his own travels and adventures. He has also been associated with Politikens Forlag, where he wrote and edited guidebooks.
Hans Erik Rasmussen lives with his wife in a housing community in Midtsjælland. He’s a father and a randfather. He is a member of The Adventures’ Club of Denmark.

ITINERARY
Day 1
FLIGHT EUROPE / NORTH AMERICA - LIMA
We fly from Europe and land in Lima at the end of the day, where we check into a hotel in the Miraflores district. We hike out to the edge of the continent and look out over the Pacific Ocean.
Welcome dinner.
Night: Hotel in Lima.

Day 2
FLIGHT TO CUSCO IN THE ANDES. ACCLIMATIZATION
In the morning we fly up into the Andes to Cusco at an altitude of 3300 meters and stay in the historic city center. Cusco has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983, and the fascinating city was once the capital of the ancient Inca Empire. The name Cusco means the Navel of the World in the ancient Inca language. Walking among the Inca walls to feel the depth of history.
We visit the section of plant medicine at the San Pedro market.

Day 3. First day of trekking
TREK TO INCA RUINS. CEREMONY WITH ANDEAN SHAMAN
Hike to an archeaological inca site near Cusco. Ou” Inca shaman makes a ritual offering to Pachamama, invokes the power and protection of the gods, and makes an energetic cleansing of each one. The shaman is a desendant from a lineage of traditionel healers.

Day 4. Secund day of trekking
TREKKING DOWN TO THE MIGHTY APURIMAC RIVER
We get up very early and ride through the west out of Cusco to the small town of Cachora. The first ten kilometers from Cachora are a horizontal path. Deep below, the Apurimac River roars and high above you, the snow-capped peaks of the mountain range contrast with the sky.
From a viewpoint, you can see the Inca city of Choquequirao about nine kilometers ahead at the same level as you, but on the other side of the river. The descent alternates between sections where it descends moderately and sections where it descends very steeply. The ground in the steep places is very loose, and it is important not to slip and fall. The thigh muscles are put to work, and the knees are subjected to a lot of strain, so expect to arrive tired at the camp at Chiquisca near the Apurimac River.

Day 5. Third day of trekking
TREKKING UPHILL
The trek is demanding, but by walking slowly on both the climbs and descents, the challenges are manageable. No stage is longer than reaching the camp below the Inca city of Choquequirao at a slow pace.

Day 6. Fourth day of trekking
INCA CITADEL CHOQUEQUIRAO
We explore the Inca city of Choquequirao. The ceremonial ushnu is an ideal place to hold a group meditation. The trek goes uphill until we continue down to terraces from the Inca erea at Pinchaunuyoq.

Day 7. Fifth day of trekking
TO THE SETTLEMENT OF MAIZAL
Trekking down to the small river Rio Blanco before hiking up the mountainside to the settlement of Maizal.

Highest point: 2.981 masl.

Day 8, Sixth day of trekking
OVER THE SAN JUAN PASS TO YANAMA
Trekking up the mountainside to the San Juan pass with views of the snow-capped peaks in the heart of the Vilcabamba Mountains. Trekking down to the small town of Yanama.

Camp: 3.538 masl.

Highest point: 4.134 masl.

Day 9. Seventh day of trekking
FROM A SMALL VILLAGE TO AN ISOLATED CAVE
Trekking through an isolated valley to a campsite near a natural rock cave.

Start: 3.538 masl.
Camp: 3.800 masl.
Lowest point: 2.700 masl.
Highest point: 3.800 masl.
Night: Tent.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 10. Eighth day of trekking
ON AN ORIGINAL ROYAL INCA ROAD
Hiking up to the highest point of the trip, a pass at 4,600 meters. From there, downhill to the place where a dirt road reaches us. Part of the time we hike on original royal Inca road. This strretch is on the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage. We drive to the town of Santa Teresa and end the day in natural hot baths.

Day 11. Ninth day of trekking
TO MACHU PICCHU WITH CLIMP OF HUAYNA PICCHU
We drive from Santa Teresa to the back of the mountain below Machu Picchu and hike to Aguas Calientes. From there we take the shuttle bus to the entrance of Machu Picchu. At Machu Picchu we walk through the ruins and climb the legendary mountain Huayna Picchu.
At the end of the day we drive down to Aguas Calientes, take the train to Ollantaytambo and drive to Cusco.
